Learning to love and accept ourselves is medicine for the soul. Helping others see the incredible beauty they've been afraid to show the world is what I was made to do. In working through my own hair challenges, I finally figured out the secrets to working with textured hair.

I can't wait to share it all with you.

Can You Relate ?

As a child being called names like brillo pad, q-tip, chia pet, poodle, medusa, witchy poo or fuzzy wuzzy, triangle head, Bozo the clown, poof ball, Shirley Temple...

Some things said like: the hair feels like hay, looks like a rats nest, or like someone put their finger in a light socket? It's all enough to make anyone unsure of themselves. Maybe there was a feeling that neither you, your family, nor Hair Stylists knew what to do with your hair?

Was there pressure to straighten with flat irons, using a clothes iron, going to bed wearing a hat, braiding it, pop can roller sets, or using a curling iron to smooth it out and make it look ‘neat’? In fact, some reading this might STILL be doing some of these things, but maybe wishing they didn't have to!

These examples come from my own past and stories I have heard from clients in my chair, but I know they are your stories too. I’ve been where you are and I’ve faced the same hair challenges.

What I know for sure is that when natural texture is embraced, hair and hearts are healed.

With the in-person and online training I created for individuals and Hair Stylists, people are finally having opportunities to learn how to care for their hair with results that last more than one day. Many are leaving the salon happy for the first time in their lives.

What you learn from me, you will carry with you for the rest of your life. Whether you're a curly individual looking for help managing your curls, or a Hair Stylist wanting to learn about all textures and curl patterns; I am here to help you.

After struggling with frizz my entire life, I went to cosmetology school in 2002 thinking I would learn how to tame my own unruly hair while learning how to make others look and feel beautiful.

What I learned was very eurocentric methods – wet cuts, hot tools, round brushes, and blow outs – all intended to smooth curly hair, not enhance it. I worked another 10 years as a traditional stylist until one day my world went from black and white to full of colour! I found a passage in a book that changed my life and the trajectory of my business.

“Frizz is just a curl waiting to happen”

- Lorraine Massey

When I discovered that my own frizz was actually wavy hair, I began using what I had learned on my own hair to help my clients. I ended up creating a salon service that so many people needed and was truly touched by the positive change my curl services made in clients lives. They finally loved the hair they were born with and were proud to wear their natural texture. It was then that I decided I would be the person I needed when I was growing up...a curly hair specialist.

What I thought was my most undesirable trait - my frizzy hair - became one of my greatest assets. Who knew?! Wearing it wavy, I finally feel like the authentic me. It also propelled me to a career when I can help others overcome the same struggle. One of my favourite quotes is:

"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better" - Maya Angelou

As a professional Hair Stylist who now knows better, I've spent the last 10 years as a curl specialist sharing what I have learned in service to others.
